The Distomo Massacre –
On June 10 1944, during the German occupation of Greece, members of the Waffen-SS troops burned down the village of Distomo and slaughtered 228 men, women and children as part of “savage reprisals” for a partisan attack upon the unit’s convoy. Within two hours the civilians were bayoneted, stabbed or hanged on village surrounding trees.
In the 2006 documentary “A song for Agryris” the swiss filmmaker Stefan Haupt draws a portrait of the survivor, a then four years old boy who lost his parents and further 30 family members due to the massacre. Agryris Sfountouris spent years in orphanages before being received by Pestalozzi Children’s Village in Switzerland. The adult Argryris, a successful astrophysicist campaign for a dialog and indemnification.
